Jupiter and Merlot had their second visit to Veterinary Holistic Care (VHC) in Bethesda, MD. In the week since their first acupuncture treatment, Merlot's incontinence did not recur. Unfortunately within days of our last visit, Jupiter's pain and stiffness returned. Acupuncture can take several treatments before improvement is noticeable, so we put him on low-dose Tramadol to relieve his pain.

Jupiter (left) was much more relaxed on this second acupuncture visit. He settled down when we arrived, and Merlot (right) parked next to him.

This past winter, both dogs picked up excess weight. Jupiter was up to 155 lbs, Merlot got to 120 lbs -- a big problem for dogs with osteoarthritis. We have slowly reduced their intake and they lost 2 - 3 lbs within the past week!

Dr. Mallu had a vet tech with her today. Since both Jupiter and Merlot are so laid back, Vet Tech Victoria (left) got to relax and enjoy the company of Danes.

We all had a giggle when I showed Dr. Mallu the photo (right) showing her inserting Jupiter's acupuncture needles. We agreed that Jupiter dwarfs her in size!

I bring a wire basket muzzle on all vet visits, both for the protection of my dogs and because I never want a vet or staff to get hurt if my dogs react in fear or pain. Basket-type muzzles cause less stress than mesh or cloth muzzles because they don't restrict breathing. It's important to use positive techniques to get them used to wearing it before using it at a vet's office.

After their acupuncture, Jupiter and Merlot relaxed for a few minutes before we headed back into the rain and heavy traffic.
