Holistic Healing: Senior Dane healthcare  June 13, 2008

The eau-de-Dane laid heavy in the air today at our visit to the Veterinary Holistic Care (VHC) in Bethesda, MD. This was Merlot's 6th acupuncture treatment and she has advanced to maintenance visits. Jupiter had a chiropractic adjustment two weeks ago and needed acupuncture to maintain his alignment. As soon as Dr. Pema Mallu inserted the last needle into Jupiter, an aroma like no other filled the room.

Both Danes get mini-checkups at each visit. Dr. Pema evaluates their vision, ears, teeth, and general body condition to determine if there were health changes since their last visit. Particularly since they are senior Danes, I appreciate her proactive monitoring of their health.

Jupiter is holding steady at 144 lbs, 10 lbs less than he did on May 2nd. Merlot weighed 122 lbs, so her weight remained stable since her last visit. We will continue to work on reducing her weight by 10 more pounds.

Boy-O-Boy, after Dr. Pema inserted the needles and Jupiter laid down and relaxed, the gas started. I encountered this when I've done T-Touch with him, but it's even more pungent after acupuncture. Evacuation of gas is a sign of his body systems relaxing.

Unlike Jupiter, girlie Merlot would never exhibit that kind of unladylike expression of bodily functions!

Vet Tech Victoria always enjoys Jupiter's company.  After Jupiter and Merlot had all their needles inserted, they relaxed and stretched out together while they "cooked." In recent years as Merlot has experienced more pain, she has rarely cuddled with Jupiter. It's remarkable that acupuncture has alleviated her pain enough so that she again enjoys nestling next to him.

After we left VHC, a block from home I saw Jupiter's favorite person on this planet, "HIS" Miss Judy. Judy Glaes was his dog walker for several years, and he simply adores her! We stopped to let her hug Jupiter and Merlot, and to let them give her kisses!
