Holistic Healing: Senior Dane healthcare  July 18, 2008

Jupiter and Merlot returned to Veterinary Holistic Care (VHC) for maintenance acupuncture with  Dr. Pema Mallu.  It seems that Merlot can only go two weeks between sessions without her incontinence recurring.  Jupiter also benefits from the pain-reducing and relaxing effects of acupuncture.

Today was a scorcher, so the pups laid out and cooled down before Dr. Pema came in. Seeing how relaxed they are (left), you'd think they actually enjoyed being poked with needles!

In addition to acupuncture, Dr. Pema read the cardiologist report from  Jupiter's echocardiogram last week. She was delighted to see that his heart is strong and functioning normally, and I was too!

.....and in customary fashion, as soon as Dr. Pema inserted the final needles, Jupiter lit up the room. It's an eye-watering experience, but it's a wonderful thing that acupuncture relaxes his body systems so effectively.

Jupiter started taking the new nsaid, Precicox, which was prescribed by our traditional vet. So far he is tolerating it well and it is helping relieve his osteoarthritis pain.

VHC is a great place to learn about all things holistic. The main DVM, Dr. Monique Maniet, uses "Nosodes" instead of vaccines to protect animals against disease. Vet Tech Robin's naturally reared adult Mastiff is a perfect example of a dog that was started as a puppy on a raw diet w/supplements, got Nosodes, and developed a strong immune system. Robin showed me this dog's titer screen, and it showed 90+ percent antibody levels for all disease.

She said for those interested in natural rearing, the safest approach is 1) start with a pup whose parents are no-vax to ensure that the puppies are born with strong immune systems; 2) work with a supportive holistic DVM to help maintain immunity to disease; and 3) do annual titer screens to make sure they remain protected throughout their lifetime.

This is great information to know! After losing our sweet Joya as a result of vaccinosis, Jupiter and Merlot are titer screened and no-vax. Savannah will have titer screens this fall, and we will treat any low antibodies with Nosodes.
