Holistic Healing: Dane healthcare October 3, 2008
By today's 12th acupuncture session at Veterinary Holistic Care (VHC), Merlot has improved significantly. Her roommate Savannah accompanied her, and Jupiter stayed at home to rest his shoulder.Merlot was delighted that Vet Tech Robin Gough worked with Dr.Pema today. Robin is also a Reiki II Practitioner and a mastiff owner, so she really loves the Big Dawgs. We may have Merlot try Reiki during a future visit.
Earlier this week Jupiter saw Dr. Steven Wolchinsky at Rocky Gorge Vet. Dr. Wolchinsky determined the source his sudden limp was a "divot" or shard of loose bone in his shoulder. Jupiter was referred to orthopedic specialist Dr. Sherman Canapp at Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group in Ellicott City, MD and will see him on November 4th.
Merlot has exhibited symptoms of low thyroid function for the past three years, but she tested normal on standard T-4 lab tests. Once she was diagnosed by Dr. Jean Dodds at HemoPet and started on Soloxine therapy, she showed dramatic results. When we weighed her three weeks ago, she was 123#. Today she weighed 117# and is much more mobile. The difference between HemoPet and other labs is their expanded T-6 lab test, plus they assess results based upon the breed of dog. Given Merlot's improvement, that makes a huge difference!
Today Savannah came along for the ride and enjoyed "nuggies" from Dr. Pema. Just yesterday she was a tiny puppy, yet seeing her photo is proof-positive that overnight she's become an adult Dane. The results of Savannah's titer tests were stunning! Although she is technically overdue for her annual booster shots, her results are proof-positive that it's better to have titer tests than to over-vaccinate:
Canine distemper virus = 256 (32 is the lowest acceptable level before booster is needed)
Canine parvovirus = 640 (80 is the lowest acceptable level before booster is needed)
