This was Merlot's 13th acupuncture session at Veterinary Holistic Care (VHC.) Since she began treatment last May, she is no longer incontinent, has stopped shedding profusely, her hypothyroidism was diagnosed and is being treated, and she is almost at her perfect weight. Most excellent!!!!

Merlot had Dr. Pema all to herself today! Last winter we noticed that Merlot had suddenly gained weight and got up to 120# -- too heavy for her tiny frame. We tried to slim her down all summer, but despite our efforts she only lost 3 lbs. In September she began taking Soloxine to treat hypothyroidism and she lost 11# in 7 weeks. She is now 109# and down one notch in collar size!

Jupiter is fine with acupuncture, but Merlot gets a little "lippy" when Dr. Pema inserts the needles. To prevent an accident, we use a basket muzzle. In my opinion, this is the best type of muzzle to use since it doesn't restrict breathing like mesh or solid muzzles. I teach all our pups to enjoy being muzzled by feeding them treats through it, so none of them mind wearing it.

At right, Merlot relaxes and stretches out to "cook" while the needles are working. We remove the basket muzzle as soon as the last needle is inserted. She may not like having the needles inserted, but she clearly loves the after-effect. And look at how she's slimming down!

We are awaiting Jupiter's appointment  with orthopedic specialist Dr. Sherman Canapp at Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group on November 4th. He is still limping badly and is on Tramadol for pain. More to come.
