Fruits of My Labor 2000:
Phase I:  A true experiment in gardening

Home Sweet Home Side Entrance After the past three draught years, the summer of 2000 was positively soggy. My gardens loved it!

So.... I got bold.  In mid-July after everything else in the yard was flourishing, I decided to try my hand at vegetable gardening. I planted in an area that hardly grew grass, so I didn't really expect to grow anything.  It was far too late in the season to plant, but God loves babes and fools!

I squared off the grass and lined it with newspapers (black & white pages only), then edged it with landscape timber.  I used the tons of leaf compost I had been collecting for the past three years, then added cow manure and lime.  I topped it all with soaker hose and landscape fabric, then covered the bed with chunk mulch to hold in moisture.

The next year is even more interesting. See Fruits of My Labor 2001!

They're bigger than Joya, and she's no little girl! Lissa's Folly Squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, blackberry and red raspberry bed growing inches a day!
I started small because I had no idea what I was doing. Not knowing what I could grow, I bought the last poor untagged vegetable seedlings that Home Depot had.  Matthew also got a 'volunteer' seedling from a woman at work.  I had to wait and see what I planted.
My baby Cucumber in progress 'Maters
They all took off!  Wonder of wonders - I was blessed with the birth of a 1 lb., 10" summer squash one month later on August 6, with more on the way!  I have spaghetti squash, cucumbers and tomatoes just waiting for a little more sun.

Everything grew this year. My Caryopteris 'Longwood Blue' bloomed profusely for the first time in it's five years. The impatiens grew two feet high, and the hanging fern took over the entire side entry.  It was a great year for gardens!

Gentlewoman Farmer Joya

Guess she approves Welcome!
My supervisor always makes sure everything is to her liking.  Joya has finally learned to stay out of the gardens, so she has free run of the yard.  Good girl!  [Update - Joya has started stealing tomatoes off the vines! Guess she likes them, too!]
